NYC Reduced Fare Programs contribute to making the use of the public transport cheaper to those who have the most necessity. These programs are operated by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in New York City. Lower fare is primarily offered to the seniors aged 65 years and over and individuals with disabilities. Eligible riders typically pay a half of the normal subway and bus fare, and this also helps to minimize the daily transportation expenses. Riders will be required to use and obtain an approved reduced fare card or OMNY access to use the program. Upon approval, the lower fare applies to the subways and local buses throughout the city. The program is particularly useful to individuals with fixed incomes, as it makes it easier and less stressful to travel on a daily basis. The NYC Reduced Fare Programs advocate equal access to transportation and assist in making sure that all people can move in the city with dignity and autonomy.

If you are a senior citizen, you don't have to pay full price for the subway or bus. This is a special gift for people who have worked hard for many years.
It is very easy to use once you have your card. You just tap your card or phone, and the machine knows you are a senior.
If someone has a permanent disability or a serious health condition, they can pay much less for the bus and subway.
This is a great way to make sure everyone can move around our big city without worrying too much about money
It is very smart to apply for this because it saves you a lot of money every month. There are three ways to apply for the Reduced Fare program.
A. Apply in Person (Fastest)
This is the best way because sometimes you can get your card on the same day if you are a senior.
B. Apply by Mail
If you don't want to travel, you can do it from your home.
C. Apply Online
You can also use your computer or phone to apply on the MTA website.
Important Tip: If you apply by mail, it can take a few weeks or even months to get your card. In person is much quicker!
You must show that you are 65 years or older. You can use one of these:
2. Proof of Disability (For People with Disabilities)
If you are under 65, you need to show you have a health condition. You can use:
3. Photo
If you send your application by mail or online, you need a picture of your face.
Note: Always bring the original documents if you go in person. If you mail it, only send a copy (photocopy). Never mail your original passport or license!
Using this program is like getting a big discount on everything you do in the city. Here is how it helps your pocket:
Q. Can I use my phone to get the discount?
Yes! If you have the Reduced Fare OMNY card, you can link it to your phone or smartwatch. Then you just tap your device and it will charge you the half-price fare automatically.
Q. What is the "Weekly Cap" for seniors and disabled riders?
If you use OMNY, you will never pay more than $17.50 in a week. Once you pay for 12 rides in a 7-day period, every ride after that is free until the week ends!
Q. Does the discount work on the LIRR or Metro-North?
Yes, but there are rules. You get the discount on Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North mostly during off-peak hours. If you travel during the very busy morning time going toward the city, you might have to pay the full price.
Q. Can I give my Reduced Fare card to a friend?
No. This is a very important rule. The card is only for you. If a police officer or MTA worker sees someone else using it, they can take the card away and you might get a fine.
Q. Do I need to renew my card?
Yes, most cards have an expiration date on the back. Usually, if you use your card often, the MTA will mail you a new one before the old one dies. If you move, make sure to tell them your new address!
Q. What if I lose my card?
If your card is lost or stolen, you should call 511 or 877-789-6669 (for OMNY) right away. They can freeze the money on the card so nobody else uses it and send you a new one.
